This spring-like weather is making us want to ditch the desk and get outside to play in the dirt!

In January, the 2012 National Green Centre at the Overland Park Convention Center showcased 50 hot new plants (including two local KC companies!) in horticulture. Each made their way to the runway during the 2012 Sweet Melissa Fashion Show, benefiting the Sweet Melissa Fund, an organization that helps lung transplant patients and recipients.

Presented by the Western Nursery & Landscape Association, this second annual trade show brought in new breeders and growers, garden centers, landscape contractors and designers, and plants from all across the country.

If you have a green thumb and are ready to spruce up your garden this spring, take a peek at the entries for the hottest new plants for 2012 — you won’t be disappointed!

To see more entries for the 2012 hottest new plants, click here. And, mark your calendars for the 2013 National Green Centre January 6-7 in St. Louis.

Let the digging begin!

Hosted by interior designer Karen Mills, “Living Large” is a luxury interior design and lifestyle show broadcast on the Entercom Radio Network. On Sunday, Nov. 20, she’ll host her 300th episode on KMBZ at 10 a.m. on 98.1 FM and 980 AM.

For the past six years, “Living Large” has covered almost any design topic you can think of and has welcomed numerous celebrity guests on the show. As a designer, Karen creates furniture pieces, home decor, jewelry and works of art, which you can also hear about on the radio or read about on her design blog.

“I feel so fortunate to have spent my childhood surrounded by art, literature, music and textiles because that experience formed the basis for the interiors I design now: spaces full of light, color, texture and warmth that engage the senses and inspire the heart,” she says. “And even though I’m known for creating inviting, timeless interiors, I’m always looking ahead for what’s new and next that I can incorporate into my interior design projects and share on “Living Large”.”

For more information on Karen Mills and “Living Large,” visit karenmills.net or livinglargeshow.com. And, be sure to tune in on Sunday morning for the 300th episode!

Congratulations on your milestone, Karen!

Grace International, an organization that provides health care, education, spiritual guidance, feeding programs and empowered living to those in need, has been working in Haiti for more than 40 years. After the January 2010 earthquake, its base of operations in Carrefour became a refugee camp — called Tent City — for 20,000 homeless residents.

In March 2011, a design team of 15 volunteers all across the country signed up with Engineering Ministries International (EMI) to volunteer their talents in rebuilding the devastating Lafiteau site in Haiti, reassessing and updating the surrounding area, and developing a potential master plan.

Local architect Brad Hubbard lent a hand in designing the church (phase 1), which is the first and most important element visible when entering the community, and the school (starting in phase 2), designed to be built in phases, is earthquake- and hurricane-proof and has well-designed ventilation systems because all buildings are open-air facilities.

Hopefully within the next 6-12 months, development will begin on the Lafiteau site, which includes in the master plan (see above) single-family homes, townhomes, civic center and ethanol facility, in addition to the church and schools. With sustainability being a large factor in the development process, there’s an emphasis on vegetable, agribusiness, fish and sugar cane production. More than 100 acres will eventually be redeveloped modeling holistic, sustainable and industrious living.

During the nine-day trip, Brad helped serve food (and candy) to hundreds of misplaced children, which he says was a heartfelt experience — and is the main reason for his volunteer efforts. He plans to go back and help in the future.

If you’re interested in volunteering on a mission like this one, visit www.emiusa.org to see a list of upcoming trips and needs.

If you haven’t visited the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens lately, you don’t know what you’re missing.

In late July 2011, phase 1 of the Train Garden, located next to the Children’s Garden, began with the addition of a full-size bright red caboose. When all four phases are complete, the Train Garden will house seven G-scale trains, a depot, two mountains, several water features and the re-creation of Historic Downtown OP and the Strang Line, along with the caboose.

As if that’s not enough to get its name on the national radar, the OPA&BG also has started working on an international sculpture garden. Showcasing works of art by internationally known sculptor Kwan Wu, the first phase will showcase 30 sculptures; phase 2 will expand into the Kemper Farm area, hopeful that the sculpture garden eventually houses 100 sculptures created by local, national and international artists. The result? This cultural highlight in the Midwest will be the first and only Chinese/U.S. culture park in the country and may include works from other countries.

Kwan Wu's " The President and The Empress"

So, if you haven’t been out to the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens — 8909 W. 179th St., in Overland Park — stop by with the kiddos today. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll see in its lush, picturesque surroundings.

For the last four months, commercial photographer Chad Jackson has been working behind the scenes with Designer Consignment Furniture & Interiors to produce a new design magazine focused exclusively on consignment furnishings and decor. They are excited to announce the launch of this new e-Magazine, Consignment Concepts.

This simple and fun design magazine began as an idea in Jackson’s mind after flipping through the pages of several popular furniture catalogs. Since he is an architectural and interior photographer, the first thought in his mind at the time was, “Why can’t we do one of these catalogs for DC?” However, Jackson wanted to produce something more than just another catalog. Since Designer Consignment is purely a consignment store, he knew that they had a very unique approach to their business.

With the help of Ginger Jackson, decorator/designer at Designer Consignment, they began looking at different ways to approach this idea, concluding that they could build the whole magazine around the concept of designing with one-of-a-kind consignment pieces. Ginger does an amazing job of taking one item as a design focal point and building an entire vignette around that centerpiece, which is the whole premise behind the new e-Magazine, Consignment Concepts.

Creating living environments that are both simple and fun is a real passion for the staff at Designer Consignment. Simply download the Consignment Concepts e-Magazine from the Designer Consignment blog, and you’re just seconds away from some exciting and inspiring ideas to liven up even your most mundane living spaces.

The current issue features outdoor living, so download the August 2011 issue today, and make your next BBQ or deck party one that your neighbors will envy!
