OK, everyone, is your Christmas shopping done?! There are only two days left, you know… Here’s a few last-minute ideas from your KCH&G elves.

Holiday glam is here! Give this mercury decanter from Nell Hill’s and forget about including the gift receipt. At $32, maybe you should buy a couple more for the most decorative impact.
We also love these floral prints from Nell Hill’s. 13 x 15.5 inches. Set of 4, $241.80.

You can’t go wrong with one of a kind, like this vintage piece from Katie Town we found at Stuff. $320

Bring a little of the outdoors in with this set of six pine cone tea lights from Pear Tree. $9.95

Got a kid or maybe a friend who will appreciate a cardboard rhino? We know there’s a shelf somewhere that needs this item from Dan Meiners.

We’re expected to get some snow this weekend, so offer to keep your friends’ hands warm with these cashmere hand warmers from Restoration Hardware. $15.

In a mad dash to find unique gifts before Christmas morning?  You’ll love these local shops, and your gift recipient will love what you get them!

Black Bamboo, located in the Crossroads Arts District, offers an eclectic mix of Asian antiques and modern furniture. Plus, it now now has a holiday catalog, so you can pick out your gift before walking into the store. On our list are these marble bowls by Alex Marshall. Asymmetrical in form, each piece is lead-free, food-safe, and microwave- and dishwasher-safe. $29-$249.

All the way from Pakistan comes this handmade glowing onyx lamp from Ten Thousand Villages in downtown Overland Park. The bulb socket sits inside the stone holder, showcasing the stone’s amazing brilliance. By the way, it doesn’t need a lampshade. $98

Or, keep a friend or family member warm this winter with a cashmere blanket from Scandia Down by Terrasi Home on the Country Club Plaza. Made in Italy, it’s 100-percent pure Mongolian cashmere sure to warm the heart. $1,500-$1,800

The holiday season is upon us, so let’s go shopping! Many of us are looking forward to upcoming dinner parties, holiday gatherings and family get-togethers, so what better way to prepare for delicious meals than cashing in on all the savings at the Hen House Holiday Celebration, November 5-7 at the Overland Park Convention Center?!

During these three days, shoppers will receive a free Hen House reusable bag, which will come in handy when you come across hundreds of dollars in coupon savings, samples, giveaways, recipes, chef demonstrations, informative presentations on hot food topics and more. Purchase tickets at any Hen House location for $5 or pay $6 at the door. This event benefits Toys for Tots and Harvesters Food Bank.

To entice you even further — but leave the rest to anticipation — you’ll see Richard Simmons on Friday; the Purina Incredible Dog Team on Saturday; Chef Holli Ugalde, 2010 winner of Hell’s Kitchen, Friday-Sunday; and local chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. on stage on Friday and Sunday.

Check hours and more in-depth information at www.henhouse.com.

Remember this fabulous cover? The tree design was by 3 French Hens, a holiday decor store at Town Center Plaza in Leawood. But we’ve just received word that it’s no longer just a Christmas store anymore. Co-owners Sherrie, Daniel and Matthew just launched an online store, offering many of the same great products plus new items for every day, and moved locations (now next to Restoration Hardware, a few doors down from the previous location). To celebrate, stop by the store every Thursday this month for a complimentary happy hour from 5:30 until close. Use the coupon code "grdopn" at the store checkout to get 30 percent off your entire order.

While stopping by Rena Shanks’ home last week to take a walk-through for a feature story, I had to snap some shots of her Christmas decorating. As the owner of Great House LLC, she is obviously style savvy. Before I even stepped through the front door, I knew I was going to love her work. A rectangular fur wreath with sparkling brooches hanging there was my first indication. What a great spin on a class piece, and so glamorous!

I also loved the way she hung some ornaments: vertically tied together in her bay window, like this.

These two ideas are so simple, really, but they were a refreshing take on traditional decorating. Stay tuned for more great ideas from Rena this year!

When we visited Bob Trapp’s condo for the photo shoot featured in our December issue (see it here), we knew we had something really special. But not only was Bob’s place great, the man himself was a true gentleman and the consummate host. Now that our issue is out, he continued to impress us with a gift bag delivered to our office with three gorgeously wrapped presents: one for myself, one for our photographer, Alistair Tutton, and one for the writer, Kathleen Leighton. I haven’t squealed with such delight since I was a child. Along with a handwritten note came delicious gifts from his store, Trapp & Company. It was the perfect sentiment during this season of sharing. In an era of photo cards and mass letters, we were completely charmed by the simplest sentiment of pen to paper.

A Personal Gift

This Christmas, rather than giving your children or grandchildren a toy that may last one season, consider a gift that will last their lifetime and for generations after them. For a $1,000 donation (payable over multiple years), your child can leave their handprint to be displayed at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Colorful reproductions of the handprints, with the child’s name and year the print was made, will be artistically arranged near the escalators that rise up to the glass lobby. Your child will forever be linked to Kansas City’s art legacy — how special is that?! Find details at www.kauffmancenter.org/donate/default.aspx?id=1026.
