Think Fabricate, a Brooklyn-based design studio, is bringing this playful, sustainable line of furnishings to market. Each well-crafted piece in the “Not Your Mother’s…!” debut collection speaks to the young company’s approach of craftsmanship, material selection and unique styling. Definitively modern, the forms also play on historical motifs and include items like china cabinets, chests of drawers and radiator covers.

The entire line is made from carefully selected materials such as FSC-rated MDF, bamboo plywood, remnant or recycled marble, and painted ash veneer. Custom graphic patterns, moldings, finishes, sizes and colors are available.

Whimsy and sophistication collide in this wall-mounted china cabinet with a dramatic angled frame. The unique molding evolved from the character of a Brooklyn brownstone and is offset with a bright accent color. Dimensions: 30H x 36W x 18D; also standard 42H

This outlined chest sitting atop a bamboo plywood base features an orchid detail on the bottom drawer. Dimensions: 36H x 36W x 18D; also standard 42H

Two overlapping heads etched in the center of this mirror create an interesting “frame within a frame” effect. The molding matches the motifs used on other pieces in the series and captures the scale and form of traditional moldings. Dimensions: 42H x 36W x 18D

Lamp Enlightenment

Wildwood Lamps just announced its latest collection, Studio W, which we promptly fell in love with. Created by designer Kerry Gibhardt (above), the collection is at the crossroads of mid-century modern and Hollywood glamour, featuring voluptuous shapes, inspired patterns and no-fear color.

The classical Dahl Lamp riffs off 18th-century French and English designs. Choose from regent or platinum finishes.

Remind you of anything? The Astrid Lamp is reminiscent of a Murano glass piece created in the 1950s. Gibhardt reinterpreted it in ceramic, decided on the color Peony for the base and topped it with a stylized floral pattern shade.

Coastal look, anyone? We love the elongated base and simplicity of the palette of the Mirabella Lamp. Of course, it’s available in numerous finishes to fit your home.

This eye-catching lamp — the Pia — also was inspired by a Murano glass vase. Its modern colors and metallic accents are designed to work with today’s interiors, nestling nicely into any transitional-style home.

When researching interior design trends for this fall — which you’ll see in our September issue — I came across a growing trend in dining room seating. A banquette, which I absolutely love, is a long upholstered bench that can stand alone or be built-in along a wall, and it seems to be a popular alternative to traditional chair seating. Simply change out a couple chairs for a cozier two-seater, which creates more flexibility and adds dimension to your regular dining set.

From Neiman Marcus, this tufted terra cotta banquette and chair set features eight-way, hand-tied springs and a handcrafted ash frame. The terra cotta brings color to the room while the banquette-style dining offers an alternative to a formal dining room.

Bench or banquette seating also makes for great breakfast nook areas, like in the one shown here by VanEch Studio. The designer creates pieces that are anchored in classical themes but represent the clients, bringing to life their personalities. Another perk to benches or banquettes is that there’s a storage option underneath the seat.

But if you’re not ready to take on a whole-room makeover, try adding just one piece to your dining set. Created by Michael Weiss (on left), this Newton Banquette is made of ash with an Oxford finish. He’s known for creating clean, sleek lines and classic geometric forms shown in dramatic modern designs. Or, take a look at Maitland Smith’s Dark Wellington Cottage Finished Bench in leather upholstery with a nail head trim. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Nowadays, homeowners are looking for furniture pieces that are both eye-pleasing and functional. The Temple Day Bed by The HomePort Collections is brand new, debuting for the first time at the end of January at the New York International Gift Fair.

Also eco-friendly, the day bed is made of mahogany and maximizes space by acting as a couch during the day but reclining into a bed at night. It includes 4 bolster pillow surrounds and 2 Kapok pillow mattresses. (Too bad the dog isn’t included, too.)

Recently, we visited Off the Vine Design & Cellar, located in Hawthorne Plaza at 119th and Roe. After picking up a couple bottles of wine reserved from our first-ever Cooking School, we took a look around the gifts and decor section of the store. It has almost anything wine-related you could want, but what stuck with us were these cute faux-leather wine purses! Apparently, they are the hit of the season, and perfect for transporting a favorite wine to a party.

Usually $39 each, they are currently on sale for $33. I’m just hoping they’re in stock later this year, too; I have some friends who would absolutely love them! (And my birthday is in April, in case anyone’s wondering…)

Sometimes a design idea is so elegant, we’re amazed that no one has thought of it before. Here’s a classic example: the standard configuration of cooktop burners has always been a rectangle or square, with two burners in front, two in the back. But with the Fires Line cooktop from Italian kitchen system designer Binova, you get a sleek, single line of burners for a more straightforward and stylish approach.

Position this line of burners at the front of the cooking area and all operations are front and center; counter space behind the burners can be used for removing items to when finished. Or, place the horizontal cooking plane along the rear of the cooking surface and you’ll have counter space in front that’s handy for prep work.  Placing the cooktop in the rear configuration also keeps hot pots far from the reach of little ones.  We love the idea of placing the Fires Line Cooktop right down the center of an island or peninsula, so you can man the stove from either side.

Fires Line (which measures 54 inches wide and 13 3/4 inches deep) is available in stainless steel, and can be placed anywhere there is a gas line.  Each burner allows for the finest gradations of heat, helping you do everything from gently simmering milk without scorching it to boiling pasta water in record time.  To learn more, visit the U.S. dealer at www.haute-living.com.

Now that we’ve entered a new year (and a new decade) many of you are probably thinking of moving forward. That often means changes to your home. Remodeling can increase you and your family’s use of and satisfaction with your home for many years; for those who are thinking of staying only a few years, certain upgrades can add value and help get that "sold" sign in your yard faster than the house down the street with the 1970s-era kitchen. But remodeling comes with its own set of challenges and requires plenty of research before starting.

One of our favorite series of books comes from the "Not So Big" collection by architect Sarah Susanka for her message of home design that’s comfortable, sustainable and meaningful, and not just about architecture but life in general. Her latest, "Not So Big Remodeling," was just voted in the Top 10 by customers of Amazon.com for 2009.

Her approach is to work with the existing footprint as much as possible, improving character but not necessarily size — small changes can make a big impact, she says. Favoring quality over quantity, Susanka and co-author Marc Vassallo offer advice on evaluating problem areas, identifying effective strategies and updating the layout for today’s lifestyles. She also spends time covering her definition of "green," which refers to not only sustainability, energy efficiency and durability, but also to innate beauty and appropriateness of size.

While stopping by Rena Shanks’ home last week to take a walk-through for a feature story, I had to snap some shots of her Christmas decorating. As the owner of Great House LLC, she is obviously style savvy. Before I even stepped through the front door, I knew I was going to love her work. A rectangular fur wreath with sparkling brooches hanging there was my first indication. What a great spin on a class piece, and so glamorous!

I also loved the way she hung some ornaments: vertically tied together in her bay window, like this.

These two ideas are so simple, really, but they were a refreshing take on traditional decorating. Stay tuned for more great ideas from Rena this year!

Add new designs and colors to your home with this peel-and-stick wall art collection called WallPops from Brewster Home Fashions. Dots, Blox and Stripes are a perfect quick-fix solution for any room that needs a little extra oomph. If you’re looking for a retro vibe, try the Paisley Please, or Loopy, which appeals to a more "mature" audience.  If you want just one solid color, try the Calypso teal, Luscious fuchsia  or Lucky Clover green.

But there’s one more option: you don’t have to stick to one style! Mix and match all shapes, sizes and colors to your taste. (It could be a great stocking stuffer idea, too.)
