Mark your calendars for this year’s Symphony Designers’ Showhouse, April 30-May 22, at 1000 Westover Road in KCMO. It’s going to be quite a show!

The Kansas City Symphony Alliance (formerly the Junior Women’s Symphony Alliance and the Friends of the Symphony) hosts the country’s longest-running, continuous, Showhouse fundraising project. This year there’s more than 30 designers on hand, remodeling and designing each and every space in this 1911 Sunset Hill home.

Here’s just a taste of what you’ll see inside:

In the formal living room, by Edgevale Interiors, a happy coral engulfs the room, but it's the built-in mini bar that grabs much attention.

In the east master sitting room, by Nebraska Furniture Mart, you'll not only find a desk and built-in shelves but also this stylish chaise for brainstorming sessions (or a quick nap).

Adorning the wall in the east master bedroom, also by NFM, is a hand-painted hutch, which complements the style of the room and is unlike any piece you've ever seen before.

Designed by Kitchens by Kleweno, the space blends custom-designed local art with the latest appliances and luxurious accents.

*Tickets are $15 at the door or $13 at pre-sale ticket outlets. Children under 4 are free. Check the website for boutique/cafe information, ticket outlets and hours of operation: www.showhouse.org.

In honor of I.O. Metro‘s newest store opening at Zona Rosa and preview party tomorrow night (June 17, from 5-8 p.m., with drinks, hors d’oeuvres and 25 percent off one item), I decided to take a sneak peek at the goods online. What I found was a wonderful melange of silly to sophisticated home decor items that could be incorporated in nearly any home. My favorites?

The timeless Houndstooth fabric seen on skirts and scarfs makes a fashion statement on the floor. This 8' x 10' rug is made of jute and costs $449.95.

I like a little twist to my decorative lighting. Here, the Tyler lamp does just that. $149.95

The true-to-life colors in this piece, called Windor Sky, are just gorgeous and can brighten a room with its turquoise or mute it with its earthy browns. $299.95

No one should take their home decor too seriously, and how could you with these fish statues puckering up on a side table?

In the bitter cold of winter or the insufferable humidity of summer, window treatments help keep the weather out. But that doesn’t mean we need them to only be utilitarian. These creative window coverings by Johnson Hardware serve a dual purpose as art pieces and curtains, sliding into place wherever and whenever you want them to. The hardware used to hang the art (Johnson Hardware’s 200 Wall Mount) even supports up to 300 pounds.  And although these pieces were initially meant to be an alternative to pocket doors, this creative application is an original and stylish twist.  And we love the color scheme and tree motifs used to tie the room and the art together!

It’s obvious how important having living space outside is to homeowners by taking a walk through our Boulevard of Dreams homes. All three dedicated space on their main levels for up-close and personal time with Mother Nature while still enjoying the benefits of a luxurious interior. Each has comfortable seating and a grill for cooking, as well as a fireplace to extend the season. With views through the treetops, who wouldn’t enjoy a little quality time al fresco?

Finally…sun in Kansas City and a jolt of color. I’m happy — and in love with the new color finishes by Somerset Bay. They remind me of one of our fabulous show homes, The Nantucket. Check out Somerset Bay’s casegoods collection at www.somersetbayhome.com then look at The Nantucket’s shining example at http://www.kchandg.com/Kansas-City-Home-Garden/Boulevard-of-Dreams-2009/The-Nantucket/index.php?mode=popup&cp=2&view=slideshow&play=0&pagemoduleid=35926.

Kitchen islands have been hugely popular in recent years, allowing homeowners room for food prep or buffet-style serving. While parents slave away at the stove, kids need a place to do homework nearby. Oftentimes, islands have a raised element with bar seating, but we’ve been seeing a trend toward lower stools underneath a cantilevered countertop at one end, like in two of our Boulevard of Dreams homes, The Prairie Stone and The Nantucket. Bar-height seating is still available in all three show homes, but for those with short legs, taking a seat is a lot easier in this newest version.
