Hosted by interior designer Karen Mills, “Living Large” is a luxury interior design and lifestyle show broadcast on the Entercom Radio Network. On Sunday, Nov. 20, she’ll host her 300th episode on KMBZ at 10 a.m. on 98.1 FM and 980 AM.

For the past six years, “Living Large” has covered almost any design topic you can think of and has welcomed numerous celebrity guests on the show. As a designer, Karen creates furniture pieces, home decor, jewelry and works of art, which you can also hear about on the radio or read about on her design blog.

“I feel so fortunate to have spent my childhood surrounded by art, literature, music and textiles because that experience formed the basis for the interiors I design now: spaces full of light, color, texture and warmth that engage the senses and inspire the heart,” she says. “And even though I’m known for creating inviting, timeless interiors, I’m always looking ahead for what’s new and next that I can incorporate into my interior design projects and share on “Living Large”.”

For more information on Karen Mills and “Living Large,” visit karenmills.net or livinglargeshow.com. And, be sure to tune in on Sunday morning for the 300th episode!

Congratulations on your milestone, Karen!

Although Candice Olson, host of Divine Designs with Candice Olson and Candice Tells All on HGTV, resides north of the border, Americans everywhere are falling in love with her home remodeling projects. After appearances on Today, Live! with Regis and Kelly, The View and The Oprah Winfrey Show, Canadian-born Olson released her second book, Candice Olson Kitchens and Baths, in April. In her newest work, she shares tips, tricks and her own experiences for turning kitchens and bathrooms –- the two hardest-working rooms in the house, she says –- into personalized havens.

Using some of the most innovative appliances (cool-to-the-touch stoves) and high-tech devices (automatic flush and lid-lowering toilets with LED lighting), Olson is respectful of the homeowners’ wishes as well as the house’s original design. Whether it’s rescuing a kitchen from a 1980s design disaster or transforming a gloomy bathroom into a relaxation paradise, Olson has the solution.

This urban kitchen is perfect for a Kansas City loft (or any other space, for that matter), boasting stainless steel appliances, an antique cabinet that Olson transformed into an island, a wine cooler and a coffee preparation area.

“Inside the display cabinets, I added mirror backing to reflect light. The only windows in the loft are at the opposite end of the room, so light-enhancing tricks like this, along with under-cabinet lighting and track lights, help keep the space from feeling cavelike.”

Other popular kitchen updates include warming drawers, hidden stoves, blackboard paint, pull-out storage drawers, built-in barbecues and self-healing cork floors.

In this modern bathroom, Olson has incorporated state-of-the-art technology with luxurious elements. Homeowners live like royalty with an infinity-edged soaking tub, a walk-in steam shower, an LCD television embedded in the mirror and a sound system.

“Gorgeous green glass tile laid in a retro-inspired pattern adds a splash of color to the walls in the wet zones and gives a nod to the historic character of the house.”

Other bathroom luxuries include waterproof lighting, rain showerheads, steam showers, wet rooms and wall-mounted faucets.

Mark your calendars for this year’s Symphony Designers’ Showhouse, April 30-May 22, at 1000 Westover Road in KCMO. It’s going to be quite a show!

The Kansas City Symphony Alliance (formerly the Junior Women’s Symphony Alliance and the Friends of the Symphony) hosts the country’s longest-running, continuous, Showhouse fundraising project. This year there’s more than 30 designers on hand, remodeling and designing each and every space in this 1911 Sunset Hill home.

Here’s just a taste of what you’ll see inside:

In the formal living room, by Edgevale Interiors, a happy coral engulfs the room, but it's the built-in mini bar that grabs much attention.

In the east master sitting room, by Nebraska Furniture Mart, you'll not only find a desk and built-in shelves but also this stylish chaise for brainstorming sessions (or a quick nap).

Adorning the wall in the east master bedroom, also by NFM, is a hand-painted hutch, which complements the style of the room and is unlike any piece you've ever seen before.

Designed by Kitchens by Kleweno, the space blends custom-designed local art with the latest appliances and luxurious accents.

*Tickets are $15 at the door or $13 at pre-sale ticket outlets. Children under 4 are free. Check the website for boutique/cafe information, ticket outlets and hours of operation: www.showhouse.org.
