In an effort to bring a bit of the outdoors indoors, many designers have turned to the forms of nature for inspiration. When we stopped at Ethan Allen a few weeks ago to see what was in store, we adored their twig side table. This week, Bobby Berk Home showed us their similar-looking tree table. But what really caught our attention was the company’s flair for fun. Bobby’s ostrich leg table is a hoot (or whatever sound ostriches make)!

It’s easy to see the Danish and Shaker roots in The Meridian collection, the latest addition to the Thos. Moser family. Designer David Moser calls it "creative revisitation," but he also put a spin on it. Meridian is the first collection ever to be introduced in ash, showcasing the grain and texture of the wood. If ash doesn’t do it for you, the collection also comes in cherry. And, as with all Thos. Moser collections, the Meridian was handcrafted at their shop in Maine using only sustainable methods and materials.

The Eco Metro line at I.O. Metro is adding furniture to the ever-growing list of green products on the market. This eco-friendly line contains upholstery that’s made of 100-percent recycled polyester fibers. The metal springs and frames have at least 95-percent recycled steel or aluminum, while the wood materials come from Sustainable Forest Initiative-certified companies, and all lumber waste is recycled.

If this chair caught your attention (It did mine!) then watch for the new Eco Metro pieces available in October. Everyone deserves to do a little holiday shopping for themselves!

Finally…sun in Kansas City and a jolt of color. I’m happy — and in love with the new color finishes by Somerset Bay. They remind me of one of our fabulous show homes, The Nantucket. Check out Somerset Bay’s casegoods collection at www.somersetbayhome.com then look at The Nantucket’s shining example at http://www.kchandg.com/Kansas-City-Home-Garden/Boulevard-of-Dreams-2009/The-Nantucket/index.php?mode=popup&cp=2&view=slideshow&play=0&pagemoduleid=35926.

Kitchen islands have been hugely popular in recent years, allowing homeowners room for food prep or buffet-style serving. While parents slave away at the stove, kids need a place to do homework nearby. Oftentimes, islands have a raised element with bar seating, but we’ve been seeing a trend toward lower stools underneath a cantilevered countertop at one end, like in two of our Boulevard of Dreams homes, The Prairie Stone and The Nantucket. Bar-height seating is still available in all three show homes, but for those with short legs, taking a seat is a lot easier in this newest version.

I love old and unusual things, and I know many of you do, too. A new book to cross my desk called "The Find: The Housing Works Book of Decorating with Thrift Shop Treasures, Flea Market Objects and Vintage Details" had me itching to go on a treasure hunt. Author Stan Williams, a native of Independence, Mo., who now lives in New York, compiled this book using 25 homes from across the country — three of which are located right here in the metro — highlighting unique furniture, lighting and decor. Whoever thinks secondhand style isn’t elegant must pick this up for a read. Whether an empty nester or bachelor, you’ll find unexpected ways to make a statement without a lot of money.

If you like what you see, follow Stan’s blog, www.theelegantthrifter.com or catch him in person when he’s in town for a book signing this week.

Friday, June 18, 5-8 p.m.: Luticia Clementine’s, 206 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO 64050

Saturday, June 20, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.: Nell Hill’s, 4101 Mulberry Drive, Kansas City, MO 64116

Would you say this is a chair or a milk jug? Well, technically, it’s both. By the Yard takes 353 milk jugs and turns them into one piece of outdoor furniture, like this Day’s End Rocking Chair. In addition to reducing some of the 800,000 tons of plastic jugs that end up in landfills each year, using recycled HDPE to produce new goods requires only half the energy needed to make products from new plastic. You can choose from chaises, rockers, gliders, tables and plant stands in seven colors. They’ll never peel, fade or chip. Because the pieces are made of high-density plastic, the jugs become a sturdy building material that can be left outside year-round, and because HDPE is 20 percent heavier than cedar, the furniture is less likely to blow over.

Prices range from $260 for dining room chairs to $1,350 for picnic tables.
