In a mad dash to find unique gifts before Christmas morning?  You’ll love these local shops, and your gift recipient will love what you get them!

Black Bamboo, located in the Crossroads Arts District, offers an eclectic mix of Asian antiques and modern furniture. Plus, it now now has a holiday catalog, so you can pick out your gift before walking into the store. On our list are these marble bowls by Alex Marshall. Asymmetrical in form, each piece is lead-free, food-safe, and microwave- and dishwasher-safe. $29-$249.

All the way from Pakistan comes this handmade glowing onyx lamp from Ten Thousand Villages in downtown Overland Park. The bulb socket sits inside the stone holder, showcasing the stone’s amazing brilliance. By the way, it doesn’t need a lampshade. $98

Or, keep a friend or family member warm this winter with a cashmere blanket from Scandia Down by Terrasi Home on the Country Club Plaza. Made in Italy, it’s 100-percent pure Mongolian cashmere sure to warm the heart. $1,500-$1,800

Remember this fabulous cover? The tree design was by 3 French Hens, a holiday decor store at Town Center Plaza in Leawood. But we’ve just received word that it’s no longer just a Christmas store anymore. Co-owners Sherrie, Daniel and Matthew just launched an online store, offering many of the same great products plus new items for every day, and moved locations (now next to Restoration Hardware, a few doors down from the previous location). To celebrate, stop by the store every Thursday this month for a complimentary happy hour from 5:30 until close. Use the coupon code "grdopn" at the store checkout to get 30 percent off your entire order.

While stopping by Rena Shanks’ home last week to take a walk-through for a feature story, I had to snap some shots of her Christmas decorating. As the owner of Great House LLC, she is obviously style savvy. Before I even stepped through the front door, I knew I was going to love her work. A rectangular fur wreath with sparkling brooches hanging there was my first indication. What a great spin on a class piece, and so glamorous!

I also loved the way she hung some ornaments: vertically tied together in her bay window, like this.

These two ideas are so simple, really, but they were a refreshing take on traditional decorating. Stay tuned for more great ideas from Rena this year!
