The holiday season is upon us, so let’s go shopping! Many of us are looking forward to upcoming dinner parties, holiday gatherings and family get-togethers, so what better way to prepare for delicious meals than cashing in on all the savings at the Hen House Holiday Celebration, November 5-7 at the Overland Park Convention Center?!
During these three days, shoppers will receive a free Hen House reusable bag, which will come in handy when you come across hundreds of dollars in coupon savings, samples, giveaways, recipes, chef demonstrations, informative presentations on hot food topics and more. Purchase tickets at any Hen House location for $5 or pay $6 at the door. This event benefits Toys for Tots and Harvesters Food Bank.
To entice you even further — but leave the rest to anticipation — you’ll see Richard Simmons on Friday; the Purina Incredible Dog Team on Saturday; Chef Holli Ugalde, 2010 winner of Hell’s Kitchen, Friday-Sunday; and local chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. on stage on Friday and Sunday.

In honor of I.O. Metro‘s newest store opening at Zona Rosa and preview party tomorrow night (June 17, from 5-8 p.m., with drinks, hors d’oeuvres and 25 percent off one item), I decided to take a sneak peek at the goods online. What I found was a wonderful melange of silly to sophisticated home decor items that could be incorporated in nearly any home. My favorites?
The timeless Houndstooth fabric seen on skirts and scarfs makes a fashion statement on the floor. This 8' x 10' rug is made of jute and costs $449.95.
I like a little twist to my decorative lighting. Here, the Tyler lamp does just that. $149.95
The true-to-life colors in this piece, called Windor Sky, are just gorgeous and can brighten a room with its turquoise or mute it with its earthy browns. $299.95

Nowadays, homeowners are looking for furniture pieces that are both eye-pleasing and functional. The Temple Day Bed by The HomePort Collections is brand new, debuting for the first time at the end of January at the New York International Gift Fair.
Also eco-friendly, the day bed is made of mahogany and maximizes space by acting as a couch during the day but reclining into a bed at night. It includes 4 bolster pillow surrounds and 2 Kapok pillow mattresses. (Too bad the dog isn’t included, too.)

Recently, we visited Off the Vine Design & Cellar, located in Hawthorne Plaza at 119th and Roe. After picking up a couple bottles of wine reserved from our first-ever Cooking School, we took a look around the gifts and decor section of the store. It has almost anything wine-related you could want, but what stuck with us were these cute faux-leather wine purses! Apparently, they are the hit of the season, and perfect for transporting a favorite wine to a party.
Usually $39 each, they are currently on sale for $33. I’m just hoping they’re in stock later this year, too; I have some friends who would absolutely love them! (And my birthday is in April, in case anyone’s wondering…)

We were sad to see the Plaza location go, but the 32-year-old housewares company is re-launching with an expanded, newly designed space at its flagship location in Crown Center. The doubled footprint makes room for additional lines and special events. The store’s main attraction will be a state-of-the-art Viking demonstration kitchen, which features dual cook tops (radiant and magnetic induction), double convection ovens, steam oven, warming drawer, two dishwashers and a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, and will be used for chef demonstrations, cooking classes and charitable events.
The grand opening is Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m., when the first 100 customers will receive a free gift; additional prizes will be presented every hour throughout the day.
