Hosted by interior designer Karen Mills, “Living Large” is a luxury interior design and lifestyle show broadcast on the Entercom Radio Network. On Sunday, Nov. 20, she’ll host her 300th episode on KMBZ at 10 a.m. on 98.1 FM and 980 AM.
For the past six years, “Living Large” has covered almost any design topic you can think of and has welcomed numerous celebrity guests on the show. As a designer, Karen creates furniture pieces, home decor, jewelry and works of art, which you can also hear about on the radio or read about on her design blog.
“I feel so fortunate to have spent my childhood surrounded by art, literature, music and textiles because that experience formed the basis for the interiors I design now: spaces full of light, color, texture and warmth that engage the senses and inspire the heart,” she says. “And even though I’m known for creating inviting, timeless interiors, I’m always looking ahead for what’s new and next that I can incorporate into my interior design projects and share on “Living Large”.”
For more information on Karen Mills and “Living Large,” visit karenmills.net or livinglargeshow.com. And, be sure to tune in on Sunday morning for the 300th episode!
Congratulations on your milestone, Karen!

Mark your calendars for this year’s Symphony Designers’ Showhouse, April 30-May 22, at 1000 Westover Road in KCMO. It’s going to be quite a show!
The Kansas City Symphony Alliance (formerly the Junior Women’s Symphony Alliance and the Friends of the Symphony) hosts the country’s longest-running, continuous, Showhouse fundraising project. This year there’s more than 30 designers on hand, remodeling and designing each and every space in this 1911 Sunset Hill home.
Here’s just a taste of what you’ll see inside:

In the formal living room, by Edgevale Interiors, a happy coral engulfs the room, but it's the built-in mini bar that grabs much attention.

In the east master sitting room, by Nebraska Furniture Mart, you'll not only find a desk and built-in shelves but also this stylish chaise for brainstorming sessions (or a quick nap).

Adorning the wall in the east master bedroom, also by NFM, is a hand-painted hutch, which complements the style of the room and is unlike any piece you've ever seen before.

Designed by Kitchens by Kleweno, the space blends custom-designed local art with the latest appliances and luxurious accents.
*Tickets are $15 at the door or $13 at pre-sale ticket outlets. Children under 4 are free. Check the website for boutique/cafe information, ticket outlets and hours of operation: www.showhouse.org.

Our sister publication, At Home in Arkansas, launched a fabulous new blog series last week with interior designer Tobi Fairley, a Little Rock-based, highly-in-demand talent who also happened to make Traditional Home magazine’s list of top 20 young designers in 2009. We’re just as big fans of Fairley’s work here in Kansas City, so naturally, we’re smitten with her blog, The Traveling Designer with Tobi Fairley, from its very first post. In it, she reveals her favorite New York City destinations and inspirations. The photo below, featuring the Kelly Wearstler-designed Café BG at Bergdorf Goodman, is just one such example. Be sure to click on to see more and subscribe to read more of Tobi’s weekly dispatches!

We got a sneak peek at what’s coming out of the New York International Gift Fair taking place next week.
The HomePort Collection will be featuring this fabulous combination of antique-styled ornamentation paired with eco-friendly modernity. Scrolling metal brackets support a natural mango wood shelf that is both functional and stylish. Shelf measures 38" x 8" x 9."
Also, we love how this accessory pops against dark walls. It reminds us of a great room we recently saw from
Sherwin-Williams. In the photo below, the company promotes its new matte black paint for a dramatic impression. Look for SW 6258 Tricorn Black, SW 6991 Black Magic, SW 6993 Black of Night and SW 2936 Black Emerald. Whereas earth tones dominate Kansas City metro area homes, matte black also offers a surprisingly cozy finish. If a whole room is too much of a leap, start with one wall and add some glossy or textured accessories; definitely balance with white trim and add pops of color like teal or pink.

It’s easy to see the Danish and Shaker roots in The Meridian collection, the latest addition to the Thos. Moser family. Designer David Moser calls it "creative revisitation," but he also put a spin on it. Meridian is the first collection ever to be introduced in ash, showcasing the grain and texture of the wood. If ash doesn’t do it for you, the collection also comes in cherry. And, as with all Thos. Moser collections, the Meridian was handcrafted at their shop in Maine using only sustainable methods and materials.
