Wine, Anyone?

Yes, please. Summer’s the perfect time (minus the 100-degree heat) to enjoy a nice glass of wine.

Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery, established in 2001 in Miami County, is taking advantage of the season with numerous activities in its vineyard. The biggest to-do right now is the Somerset Wine Trail. Somerset Ridge partnered with new local vineyards Nighthawk Winery and Middle Creek Winery to showcase all three wineries’ dedication to growing delicious grapes in the area’s limestone hills and making handcrafted local wines. All are open on Saturday and Sunday.

For a weekend getaway or much-needed day off, visit Somerset Ridge’s tasting room, open from open from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and noon – 5 p.m. on Sunday, and stop by to say hi to owners Dennis and Cindy Reynolds. You can check out a list of their fabulous grape varieties here. Also, find this wine at local retailers and restaurants, including Bonefish Grill, Blanc Burgers, Bluebird Bistro, Hereford House and Jaspers, among others.

Upcoming Events:
Wednesday, July 20 - Kansas City Homes & Gardens magazine Cooking School at Kitchens Studio: KC with Chef Laurie Haney of Rumors Steakhouse and Somerset Ridge wines.

Saturday, July 23 - Brazilian Carnival Event at Somerset Ridge.  Enjoy Brazilian guitarists, percussionists, vocalists and other surprises, too.

Sunday, July 31 - Join us for a private wine tasting and tour of the newly renovated Miami County Historical Museum.  An undiscovered gem full of Civil War memorabilia and winemaking history. The wine tasting, tour and year membership to the museum is only $20.  Email Somerset to make a reservation.

Thursday Evenings at McCormick & Schmick’s – Enjoy the patio and bar at McCormick & Schmick’s on the Plaza every Thursday evening this summer, where they are featuring Local Cubed. Enjoy specials on locally produced libations, including wine from Somerset Ridge, beer from Boulevard Brewing and vodka from Clear10.

Sweet Sips

NoRTH Modern Cuisine, at the One Nineteen shopping center, is pulling out all the stops for spring! It has recently added a mid-day menu and mid-day drink specials to its lip-smackin’ repertoire, perfect for sipping on the patio. While the mid-day menu with special prices runs Monday-Friday from 3-6 p.m., you’ll only find the new drink menu on Wednesdays. But don’t let that bum you out — these new mixology drinks, made from real fruit and veggies, are definitely worth the trip.

♦The Sangria Rosso: Primitivo and Cassis with blackberries, raspberries and strawberries

♦ Succo di Bacca: 10 Cane Rum, fresh strawberries, lemon juice and fennel syrup topped off with Moscato d’Asti

♦ The Valente:Jim Beam, a red bell pepper, basil, lemon juice and honey

Botanical: Beefeater Gin, tonic, cucumber and fresh tarragon

Blackberry Fix: Cruzan Light Rum with smashed blackberries over crushed ice

il bacio: Belvedere Vodka with soda water, rosemary sprig and raspberries

Frizzante: Prosecco with fresh fruit puree and flavor of your choice

No matter which one(s) you choose, you can’t go wrong. Cheers!

Recently, we visited Off the Vine Design & Cellar, located in Hawthorne Plaza at 119th and Roe. After picking up a couple bottles of wine reserved from our first-ever Cooking School, we took a look around the gifts and decor section of the store. It has almost anything wine-related you could want, but what stuck with us were these cute faux-leather wine purses! Apparently, they are the hit of the season, and perfect for transporting a favorite wine to a party.

Usually $39 each, they are currently on sale for $33. I’m just hoping they’re in stock later this year, too; I have some friends who would absolutely love them! (And my birthday is in April, in case anyone’s wondering…)

If you can appreciate Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast awarding Basel Cellars’ 2005 Syrah with 90 and 93 points, respectively, get down to A Wine Flights Bar & Bistro tomorrow night at 7 p.m. to get up close and personal with a good glass of wine. $35 covers food and wine. Good conversation is free. Check out http://awineflightsbar.com.
